PIKSY AND SHAMMAH VOCALS WIN BIG AS FRESH NAMES CARRY THE DAY AT THE 2018 UMP AWARDS

Piksy and Shammah Vocals were the big winners at the 2018 UMP awards, scooping two awards each.

The award ceremony which was held at Robins Park in Blantyre City and was hosted by Special DT and Dj Goxy of zathu pa wailesi and saw performances from Salama African dance crew, Slessor, K Banton, Ababa Surgeant, Purple C, Piksy, Lilia, Tuno, Suffix, Temwa, Kell Kay, Gwanba & Fredokiss, and Shammah Vocals, who brought Teddy and Taonga on stage to perform his hit single “Daily” with him.

On the decks were DJ’s West, Shot and Nyaxy, who treated fans to some great mixes, electrifying the atmosphere as some fans showed off their B-boying skills, putting everyone at a stand still with their scopes and flips.

There had been some questions about some of the nominations as is the case every year, but once the winners were announced, there was a feeling of content among the crowd as the winners list was dominated by first time winners like Piksy, Shammah Vocals, Toast, Tuno, VJ Ken, Purple C, and Eli Njuchi, all walking away with their first UMP Awards.

But the men of the night were Piksy who won Song Of The Year with “Umakwana” and Artist Of The Year, and Shammah Vocals, who scooped Best Afro Soul and Best Urban Gospel awards respectively, winning the most awards on the night.

Fredokiss got the Humanitarian Award for his works with the community and using his influence to help the youth. In his acceptance speech, he hailed fans for voting for fresh names rather than the old ones who had been winning awards in the past. This followed his facebook post in which he asked fans not to vote for him but rather the younger artists who had put in so much work this year.
